In recent years, food manufacturers in the United States have realized the enormous cost savings of using a retort pouch over traditional canned food. If this is a market you are looking to enter, it’s important to find a packaging supplier that knows the ins and outs of how to package RTE food properly.

CarePac specializes in flexible barrier pouches and partner with you to produce a truly exceptional retort pouch product.

We Make Flexible Retort Products For All Types of Foods

Soup and Sauces

Our flexible retort pouches make great packaging solutions for soup and other liquid food products. You can use sealers with our bags to ensure your products stay fresher for longer. We can even add a protective inner layer to prevent leakage and prevent exposure to oxygen.

Beans and Curry

Retort pouches have been popular for years throughout the world. Curry and cooked bean products are a great option for retort pouches which are esthetic and allow for more immersive graphics and branding designs than labeled cans.

Ready Made Meals

Shelf stable ready to eat meals that do not require refrigeration have been a growing segment of consumer demand. Customers view of pouches is typically "higher" than that of the same food packaged in cans while affording the benefits of retort pasteurization.

Benefits of Retort Packaging Films

Why are retort pouches popular? Why would I choose them for my product?

Retort pouches are popular because of their numerous advantages over other packaging types. Firstly, they are lightweight and easy to transport, making them an ideal choice for the food industry. They are also easy to store and can be stacked, saving valuable space. Secondly, the pouches are designed to maintain the taste, flavor, and aroma of the food inside, ensuring that the product is fresh and appealing to consumers. Thirdly, they are convenient and easy to open, making them popular among consumers who appreciate the ease of use.

How is retort packaging different than aseptic packaging?

Retort packaging involves sealing pre-cooked food products into a flexible pouch or container and subjecting them to high-temperature sterilization processes.

Aseptic packaging, on the other hand, is a method of packaging that involves sterilizing the packaging material and the food separately before they are combined in a sterile environment. The food is typically heated to a high temperature for a short time and then cooled before being filled into pre-sterilized packaging.

Why Is retort packaging ideal for prepared foods?

The retort pouches are suitable for packaging a wide range of food products, including ready-to-eat meals, meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits.

They are particularly popular for products that require long-term storage, such as military rations, emergency food supplies, and camping foods. They are also ideal for products that require minimal preparation, making them a popular choice for busy consumers who want quick and convenient meals.

What alternatives to retort packaging exist?

HPP (High pressure pasteurization), vacuum pasteurization, and Ultra Heat Treatment) are other methods of sterilization.

Can Retort Packaging be used for end user Boiling Water Reconstitution?

Yes, retort packaging is a good choice for boiling water reconstitution (adding hot water to reconstitute freeze dried or dehydrated foods) because of it's ability to withstand high heat. Camping meals and emergency preparedness meals are two common applications.

What are the MOQs on custom retort packaging?

Our MOQ’s are some of the lowest around – as little as 5,000 pieces. If you're looking for less than 5000 bags, we offer some digitally printed solutions as well.

Flexible Retort Packaging Options Food & Other Products

Flat Pouches

2-Seal and 3-Seal

3 side retort pouches are a fantastic choice when you do not need the product to sit on a shelf. Or whey you plan to display the product inside of a display box. The flat pouch configuration is less complex than a stand up pouch which means less folds and seams, allowing for a sturdier pouch.

Stand Up

Pouch

Stand up pouches have a wide face and back, which makes them perfect for custom printing and/or applying a label. Most prepared foods are placed on stand up pouches so they can stand on the shelf and have more room for the product in the gusset area. Both clear materials and metalized can be used.

PVDC and EVOH Coating

With PVDC and EVOH coating options even clear pouches can have higher barrier for longer shelf life. Generally we believe that PVDC coating is a promising nylon coating option for retort pouches when compared to EVOH as EVOH is more moisture sensitive.
