Benefits of Retort Packaging Films

What Is Retort Packaging?

Retort packaging is packaging that is used as part of the retort sterilization process. Where sterilization is obtained through the application of heat to a sealed container.

How is retort Packaging different than aseptic packaging?

With Retort packaging, the food is heated in the pouch. With aseptic packaging, the food is ultra-heated outside the pouch, quickly cooled, and loaded into sterilized packaging.

Why Is Retort Packaging Ideal for prepared foods

By using the correct materials (plastics that withstand the temperatures required for sterilization) both the food item and the pouch are sterilized through the heating process. Creating one sterilization process.

What alternatives to retort packaging exist?

HPP (High pressure pasteurization), vacuum pasteurization, and Ultra Heat Treatment) are other methods of sterilization.

Can Retort Packaging be used for end user Boiling Water Reconstitution?

Yes, retort packaging is a good choice for boiling water reconstitution (adding hot water to reconstitute freeze dried or dehydrated foods) because of it's ability to withstand high heat.

What are the MOQs on custom retort packaging?

Our MOQ’s are some of the lowest around – as little as 5,000 pieces. If you're looking for less than 5000 bags, we offer some digitally printed solutions as well.

Flexible Retort Packaging Configurations for Food & Other Products

The History of Retort Packaging

3 side retort pouches are a fantastic choice when you do not need the product to sit on a shelf. Frozen foods, jerky, and custom retort packaging are just a few examples where this would be a viable configuration. Available in PET and other plastics.

Stand Up

Stand up pouches have a wide face and back, which makes them perfect for custom printing and/or applying a label. Our stand up retort pouches can be custom printed and available features include heavy duty zippers, tear notches, hang holes, pour spouts, and valves for custom retort packaging.

Square Bottom

Square bottom retort pouches are an older configuration of pouch, still popular with the coffee industry, and many others. As the bottom gusset provides the stability and allows the pouch to stay upright, the proper choice of which style to use is important when design custom retort packaging.
