MIL DTL 117 Packaging & Materials

Military Specification Packaging Products MIL-DTL-117 Type IV Bags, Scrim-Foil Bags, Moisture Barrier Bags

When it comes to packaging sensitive equipment for military applications, there are a few important things that need to be considered. Not only must the material be strong and durable in nature, but, most importantly, it must meet the specifications laid out by the Department of Defense Index of Specifications and Standards (DoDISS).

These standards lay out federal standards for the size, material, construction, and features of all packaging, in addition to standards that are specific to the military. Those specifications range from being waterproof and vapor proof to protecting the contents of the bag from the elements. One of those standards is MIL-DTL-117.

What’s MIL Spec Packaging?

MIL-DTL-117, short for Military Details 117, is a United States military specification for general-purpose packaging, including heat-sealable bags. Since these MIL spec bags are used for packaging a variety of sensitive equipment, including electronic devices, ammunition, and food, they must adhere to very specific specifications. The standard defines the physical and performance characteristics of the packaging to ensure it meets the unique needs of the military and provides adequate protection for what’s contained within them.

Though these barrier bags can be made from a variety of materials (polyethylene, polypropylene, aluminum foil), they must all adhere to the same specifications regardless of their composition. The standard also covers more than heat-sealable bags and covers virtually any packaging material, including boxes, crates, and bags.

MIL DTL 117 Bags- Benefits & Advantages

The primary advantage of MIL-DTL-117 bags is that they’re compliant with the standards set forth by the DoDISS. Compliance aside, there are a few other benefits and advantages of using MIL-DTL-117 packaging, including:

  • Moisture and vapor proof- MIL-DTL-117 bags will keep moisture and vapor out, which protects the contents within from spoilage. This is especially important for food, ammunition, and other essential supplies.

  • Compatibility- Bags that adhere to the MIL-DTL-117 standard are compatible with a wide variety of materials, meaning they can be used to package a variety of equipment.

  • Customizability- Our MIL-DTL-117 bags aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution; they can be custom-made to meet very specific requirements.

Type refers to duty rating, class refers to the level of barrier protection, and style refers to whether it is clear or opaque. Here is a full list of the various packaging methods:
